Frozen Food

Winter came to Vashon last night, scattering  an inch or two of snow over the chicken run (and everything else too). I put their food on a plank of wood which created absolute Bedlam. They were all jostling for position, shoving and pecking to keep their position on it and their feet out of the snow. Egg production has ground to a halt on account of the labor union calling a strike for better conditions.
Legend Jr did get a wind turbine kit for Christmas to generate some electricity for the Coop, but he is still totally absorbed by his Starwars Lego to think about the chickens, so it is still lying on the bedroom floor unopened, exactly where he left it.
The coop is insulated and cosy, but the run area is like Siberia. You folks that live in really cold parts of the world will be scoffing at this characterization, as it is just below freezing, but we have been enjoying a very mild winter so far. More snow is forecast for the next couple of days, so I'll be doing the rounds to make sure we are not creating frozen chicken dinners for the Raccoons.

  2. I grew up on a farm and one of my chores every day was to feed the chickens. They scared the hell out of me because they would try to peck at my feet. I never learned the art of picking one up, ever.

    2. Opportunistic little red devils, arn't they.
With all of the snow we have had in the last week, the chickens haven't shown their faces outside of the coop. They've had breakfast in bed every day.
